History of Tlabung

Demagiri is another name of Tlabung. There was no settlement in this area but it was a hunting spot of  Rothangpuia (a Lusei Chief) and his subjects and everyone was under his rule and jurisdiction. In November 1871, the township was first established when Lt. Col. T.H. Lewin- the Superintendent of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, ordered Mr. Crouch-his Assistant and 150 soldiers from the Frontier Battalion to construct a fort at Tlabung which was to serve the Battalion Headquarters of the Southern Column of the Lushai Expedition to rescue Mary Winchester -a young girl from the Lushai Chief Bengkhuaia. On 1st April 1898, it became a part of the South Lushai Hills, although it was a part of the famous Chittagong Hill Tracts in the past. During 1860-70, it became a growing trade center. It was used as the primary river port to import goods from what is now Bangladesh through the city of Chittagong.
